A New Voice for a New Theme in Fair Trade Tea
The Small Organic Farmer Association or SOFA is a sustainable model that combines fair trade and organic food production. The founder, Dr. Sarath Ranaweera, is an organic food manufacturer in Sri Lanka, who now spends much of his time advocating on the benefits of the SOFA initiative.
"Our model is simple and sustainable. Our company takes care of the marketing and quality certification while the producer (farmer) gets a minimum guaranteed price set by SOFA. The farmer needs not worry about marketing or quality certification; he has his buyer and assured price," said Ranaweera.
SOFA has a strategy to end farm subsidies which force overproduction, monoculture and the dumping of cheap produce onto world markets - all of which lead to the destruction of local and regional food markets.
