Cheap Food Contributes to Immigrant Labour, Poor Quality of Life in Rural South
In this original contribution to Foodforethought, Phil Stuart Cournoyer explores the reality of south-south and south-north migration on rural livelihoods in the South. At the level of global food policy this article highlights the consequences of the damage done when cheap imports to Europe and North America force people elsewhere in the world off their land and onto a very tenuous labor market - another case of how cheap food causes global poverty. It also highlights the conditions of poverty required to export tropical foods. Therefore the article identifies the importance of farm and food labor as requiring the same kind of attention from food security promoters as exploitation of small-scale farmers and the environment.
