Soft Drink Companies Fund Public Health Campaigns Directed Toward Children

In Mexico where 80% of schools lack access to safe drinking water, the population consumes more soft drinks than any other in the world and obesity rates are second only to the US, it is welcome news that the Ministry of Education has launched campaigns for healthy lifestyles in schools. But the campaigns are funded by PepsiCo and Coca Cola. The Coca Cola campaign Movimiento Bienestar encourages physical activity while reminding parents that it is important to stay hydrated – a task that can by accomplished by many coke products.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest is leading a global campaign, which targets major soft drink producers, against this kind of soft drink marketing. Governments can develop policies which make access to safe drinking water in schools a priority, make healthy foods more affordable than sweet, fatty alternatives in addition to introducing legislation to curb the sale of soft drinks in schools.
