Rising Cost of Grain Leads to Unexpected Outcomes

The price of grain continues to climb. Poor crops in some regions, increased urbanization in places like India and China, change in land use to grow grains for livestock feed and ethanol are all contributing to increased grain prices and low stock levels. In Thailand, the high price for rice is responsible for theft of the crop and now a police presence to deter the practice, reports The Guardian. Some governments in Asia are now also banning the export of rice to ensure sufficient food supply for their people. The situation threatens to linger until the "supply response" kicks in.
