Latin American Leaders Warn About threat to food Costs of Biofuels



This week the Presidents of Bolivia and Peru named biofuels the culprit of the current food crisis. Many countries in the global South, encouraged to produce high value fruits and vegetables to earn foreign exchange and import staples, are feeling the affects of rising food prices. World prices for basic foods have nearly doubled in the past year sparking food riots in parts of Asia, Africa and Latina America. These developments highlight the vulnerability inherent in such a highly interdependent food economy.
