Farmland is Critical to Taiwan's Future

In this article concerning Taiwan, Matthew Hinson laments on the loss of land that can be used to feed Taiwan and projects a scary future of the island being more dependent on imported food. For Hinson, education is the key to reversing the slide in domestic agricultural production. A population schooled on the heritage of growing food and an appreciation for the nutritional value of local food will allow farmers to chrge a premium for their goods. To preserve land, the author advocates state-run land trusts to keep lands productive for generations to come. The author also advocates for a community-based agriculture, where land ownership is not concentrated in a few hands. Please click here to read the article.
