The forces of supply and demand, coupled with speculation led to a wild ride in the global price of rice in 2008. In an effort to ensure enough rice for the domestic market, the government of Vietnam made it more to difficult for farmers to export rice. Now due to a variety of factors including a bumper harvest, Vietnmaese farmers face the situation of not being able to sell all of their rice.
