The Food Crisis and Healthy Land

Agricultural growth is viewed by many as one of the keys in fighting global hunger. For agriculture to expand, land degradation - a complicated environmental, economic and social problem - will need to be tackled. Dr. William Dar, director general of the International Crops Research Institute of Semi-Arid Tropics (Icrisat) argues that the application of "good science" is central to combating land degradation. Dar oversees a sub-committee that is collaborating with international research bodies to research,, monitor and assess the biophysical and socioeconomic trends of land degradation with the aim of enabling better policy.
