Pumpkins, Compost and Agri-tourism

In recent years, Holloween has become a major consumer event in North America. This has led to an increased demand in pumpkins and a renewed interest in pick-your-own pumpking farms. A new study from Rutgers examines how leaf mulch from nearby urban areas can improve the quality and field conditions of pumpkins in these agri-tourism production sites. Results point to a win-win situation. The farms benefit from added organic material and urban taxpayers come out ahead as this is a cost-effective and environmentally responsible way to get rid of collected leaves.
