The Conference on Desertification (COP9) is currently meeting in Buenos Aires. Of particular interest will be the situation in Latin America. Currently, dryland comprise 25 percent of the land mass. Of that, 75 percent of the land suffers from severe degradation. Expansion of agriculture onto fragile lands is the main culprit.
